The M Roadster, and the M Coupe that followed for 1999, put BMW M's inline-six into the compact Z3 with wider rear fenders, a limited-slip differential and a five-speed manual; no automatic was offered. US cars used the 3.2-liter S52 engine through 2000 and the higher-revving S54 for 2001 and 2002. Low production, particularly of the coupe, and an unfiltered driving character have made them some of the most collected BMWs of their era.
