The R8 was Audi's first mid-engine supercar, built around an aluminum space frame with quattro all-wheel drive and sharing its basic architecture with the Lamborghini Gallardo. It launched for 2008 with a 4.2-liter V8; the 5.2-liter V10 followed for 2010 and the open-top Spyder for 2011. Earlier cars offered a gated six-speed manual or the single-clutch R tronic, and a seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic arrived with the 2014 update. Its side blades made it instantly recognizable, and its everyday usability made it a supercar people actually drove.
