The 997 returned to round headlights and a more classic 911 look on an evolution of the 996 platform. Carrera models used a 3.6-liter flat-six and S models a 3.8; the 2009 update brought direct fuel injection and replaced the Tiptronic automatic with the PDK dual-clutch. Coupe, Cabriolet and Targa bodies were offered with rear- or all-wheel drive, the latter with wider rear fenders. Many enthusiasts regard it as the last compact, analog-feeling 911.
